How To: Dominate Your Event Invitations, Part I

Good event invitations are essential, and we want to offer some advice about how to dominate them. Dominating invitations might sound funny, but we mean in it the most inspirational way possible: think high school cheerleading. And we know invitations are the first moment when you’ve done enough backwork to reach out to your future guests. Therefore, you want to make the invitations perfect, as the invitation could make or break guests’ enthusiasm to attend your event.

We briefly mentioned some invite-related advice in a former blog post, found here. Because invitations are so important–hello, how else will everyone know when and where to show up, what to wear, and how handsome you and your fiancé are together–we thought we should pick this topic back up in a little more depth. Special and corporate event clients, we haven’t forgotten about you! We hope this article will provide you with helpful information, too.

To start, we love the tips and clear examples listed here by Robin Bickerstaff Glover for The Spruce, especially how Robin differentiates between wording for casual invites versus formal invites. She offers some other great invitation hacks such as:

Check your guest list. You need to make sure you have enough invitations and a few extras. After all, someone from your original list may not be able to attend, giving you a spot for someone else you would like to invite.

Paper vs. Digital: Which Invitations Are More Successful

A recent tweet from WeddingWire inspired us to crowd source opinions about invitations. One particular Twitter user, @bowvalleydj, mentioned their experience and how maybe a blend of both the “white noise” of digital and traditional “snail mail” as the best approach to present day wedding communication. We know there is a certain aura around physical mail–a nostalgia that makes it feel important and special–but both digital and physical invitations have one goal in mind: catch your guests’ eyes, pique their interest, and persuade them to attend your event. As long as you know your audience and choose a medium that aligns with the event you’re planning and your and your co-planner’s taste, everything else will fall into place.

If you’re hosting a corporate event, the focus may be less about the invitation’s aesthetic and more about efficiency. Before you shake your head, bear with us. Have you heard of Paperless Post? They have digital invitations that are just as good as the traditional versions, AND their pretty digital cards could be mailed directly to your Listserv or other email group in mere seconds. Choosing digital invitations rather than physical ones is a timesaver, but if snail mail is a viable option for your event (and you don’t have other work piling up), we like the creative designs found here.
